My Writing Process Blog Hop………

MM_Rachel'sRetribution-blogI’m blogging today as part of the My Writing Process blog-hop which showcases both different writing styles and different ways of working. My first romance was published in 1976 and although styles have changed over the years my love of writing has never faded.

What am I working on?

I’m currently working on a new romance which is slightly different to the ones I usually write in that the heroine is a very troubled young lady, so much so that she tried to take her own life, and the hero is her saviour. They’re an unlikely couple but he takes a personal interest in her and the relationship is beginning to build into something very interesting. This is the first time I’ve written a character driven story rather than a plot driven one so it is rather challenging, but I have to admit that I’m thoroughly enjoying it.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I believe that although there are hundreds of romance writers each individual story is unique, every character is unique, and every writer has a different way of expressing herself. So although romance is the generic title for the type of book that I write I have my own voice, the same as every other author. I compare it to giving a class of schoolchildren an essay to write on a certain subject. They all turn out very differently and that’s because they each have their own voices as well.

Why do I write what I do?

The simple answer is because I’ve always read romance, right from when I started reading adult books . My mother used to read them as well, though sadly she died before I began my writing career. I began writing when an idea for a short story popped into my head (I think it was because I’d gone back to college to learn languages, and English was a part of the course) The story grew and grew until it became a full length romance. I had no idea what to do with it so I joined my local Writer’s Circle. Such a wise decision! The lady who ran it was a Mills & Boon writer and she persuaded me to send it in to them. It was the best thing I ever did. Actually this book wasn’t accepted but they sent me an encouraging letter and the rest, as they say, is history.

How does my writing process work?

My writing process works well because when I gave up work to become a full time writer I carried on with the same office hours. I treat it as a job. Some days I write, some days I spend doing research, and then there are the days when I need to catch up on paperwork – unfortunately the clerical side of the job is not nearly as interesting as the writing side. But I do write every single day except weekends.

My next book, Rachel’s Retribution, which is my 80th – a big cheer here – is being published as an e-book in the middle of this month – though I don’t have an exact date yet. But I do have a cover. As soon as I have a publishing date I shall report it here on my blog and on Facebook.
