Margaret Mayo, Romance Author

My journey to becoming a writer

For those of you who are not on Facebook I’m re-posting here the first of two parts describing my journey to becoming a romance author.

It began in the mid 1970’s when I worked as a secretary to the General Manager of a foundry moulding machine company. Nothing romantic there! I was sometimes on my own in the office with nothing much to do and this was when an idea sprang into my mind for a short story. A romance, of course, because I’d always read romance, as had my mother before me.

I wrote it at the office and the story expanded and expanded until it became a full scale novel. The trouble was I didn’t know what to do with it. Who could I turn to for help? There were no computeres then.  So I joined a writer’s circle where the president was (fortuitously) a Mills & Boon writer. She took me under her wing, I did a lot of re-writing, and the rest as they say, is history.

Not that my first novel was accepted, but they liked my style and said they would read anything else I wrote.

More next time…
