The Art of Writing

The art of writing is not sitting down and thinking about it. It’s getting something down on paper. It doesn’t matter that it’s not great literature. We’re telling a story, in our own way, but also in a manner that makes readers want to read on. In order to do that we need to grab their attention right from the word go, that’s why first sentences are most important.

I’ve been looking at some of my own :

Sienna’s heart pounded as she stood outside the prestigious residential development.

‘You’re expecting me to marry Vidal Marquez?’

Rhianne heard the screech of brakes before she saw the car, by then it was too late.

‘I’m sorry, John, I can’t go through with it.’

Vane Oliver was every bit as intimidating as Debra had been warned.

I also look at first sentences in books when I buy them. First pages actually.  If the first page doesn’t interest me I don’t buy the book. How about you?
