Stratford Upon Avon

This time last week DH and I and a couple of friends were in Stratford-on-Avon – the home of William Shakespeare! Despite the weather – there were plenty of heavy rain showers – the whole place was buzzing. We didn’t do any of the touristy things as we’d done them all before, but there were hundreds of visitors from all over the world queuing up to see where Shakespeare was born, Ann Hathaway’s Cottage, etc. It’s such an emotional, awe-inspiring place. You can take a boat trip along the river or see the sights from open topped buses.
And completely out of character was a shop selling Christmas decorations and playing Christmas carols! Can you believe it? It was like being in a cave with every inch of wall and ceiling hung with sparkling baubles, smiling Santas and glittering lanterns. The guy who runs it was sitting in a chair in a corner and if he’d had a white beard and a red robe he would have looked just like Santa himself. Perhaps he was! I can’t help but wonder whether the shop is there the whole year around – it was certainly busy.
To finish off the day we had a very English afternoon tea in a beautiful hotel. This was actually the whole reason for our visit. Some friends of ours had been given a voucher as a present and when they told us where they were going we asked if we could join them. (We had to pay of course)
Tea or coffee came first, with our own individual pots and as many refills as we liked. Then a plate of mixed sandwiches – with the crusts cut off. (We had a choice of fillings and bread type) They were accompanied by a darling little salad. To follow came a selection of mouth-watering cakes on a tiered stand – we all ate far more than was good for us. And finally a white chocolate fondue fountain with marsh mallows, green grapes and strawberries. I gave the fondue a miss but enjoyed the strawberries and grapes.
All in all we had a very good day out.
